1962 Dynamic 88 parts availability?
1962 Dynamic 88 parts availability?
As a hobby I like to take non running barn finds and get them running and roadworthy. The challenge is to find the right vehicle that's in decent enough shape, not expensive and won't take too much $$ to get it going.
One possibility is a barn find 1962 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88. It is a 2dr hardtop. 394 4v. Looks solid and seller says minimal rust. Picture shows it still covered in barn dust so it's hard to tell but looks straight. Seller recently acquired it and doesn't know when it last ran. Hasn't checked to see if the motor is free. I'll take a drive after the holidays for a better look and take a wrench to see if the motor is free. I'm just wondering what general parts are like for availability to get it roadworthy. It's no fun if it gets too costly or difficult to find parts. Last thing I want is to open a can of worms.

Little to no reproduction parts available for 62 big Olds, but some things like glass and weatherstripping cross to Impala.
Rear bumpers are a known issue and non-rotted cores can get expensive.
Some have generators, some have alternators.
394 is not a cheap engine to rebuild if it gets into that and neither is the SlimJim HydraMatic. Charlie Jones has a great thread on a 394 rebuild. The way these drivetrains mount in the chassis, a later engine swap requires a lot of fabrication.
But you will have a nice-looking and performing car when done, and you're about guaranteed to have the only one at the cruise night. Starfires are plentiful but Dynamics, Supers and Ninety Eights get left by the wayside.

Some general mechanical parts are available at your local parts store, others limited on line. The car is not supported through the aftermarket like Abodies, so donor parts cars are your only option. The return on investment is not great since these cars have no real following outside of the Olds community, most retore them out of love not profit.
