1961 Olds Super 88 Holiday?

Hello, my father purchased a 1961 Oldsmobile Super 88 Holiday a couple years ago and has been tinkering with it. The other day he showed me a part from the vehicle that he had no clue about, nor has anyone else he has shown it to.
It's basically a big heavy steel cylinder with several wraps of heavy wire. Originally it was covered in heavy waxy paper. Just looks like a big coil, but the wire lead you can see was broken off, and there was what appeared to be another lead soldered to the steel tube. He said this part was mounted up out of the way near the radiator. Cannot find any loose wires anywhere else inside the engine comparment. Vehicle runs fine without it so we are baffled as to what it could be? (White card in the picture is about the size of a credit card.
Any ideas?

Sorry, I don't seem to be able to upload the pictures I have right now, they are way to big and I don't have the ability to edit them right now. I will try to post them later tonight.

Been trying to add pictures, have a couple 800x600 .bmp files, but they are 850 kb in size and they exceed the file size that can be posted. Will have to see what I can do when I have access to my laptop at home.

This is not my era of car so I might be way off but it looks like some kind of voltage step-down resistor type of thing , but I wouldn't have any idea why it would be in a sixties era car..... Tedd

Yeah, it's strange. My father bought the car from a dealer that sells only classic cars, but it came with a folder with the previous owners notes and repairs that he had done to it. He was taken for a ride on several transactions from what my dad tells me. Thought at first this was something that was added later on, but the Maroon colored paint on the item looks like factory paint, but who knows?

I have this car. All original. I don't see anything like that on mine.

we had 2 61s, a 98 and an 88, and neither had anything like this on them. I expect it was one of the magical devices that JC Whitney sold
