1961 Olds 88 Dome light help

I can turn the dome light switch on and off at the dome light but nothing happens, but when I open each door separately the dome light comes on.

At the lamp there is a black wire always hot. And a white wire.

I can't figure out whats going on.

Should it come on with the Courtesy light switch on the dash?

Help!

Had one back in the 60's, but can't recall what did what. It is possible the courtesy light swithch only turns on the dash/foot well lights. Look in the owner manual. It should tell you what the switch does/does not control.

Is the switch on the dome light dirty or corroded?

I don't have the owners manual and the GM sevice manual says nothing.

I took the switch apart and it looks fine.

Well, then I'd say go through the wiring schematic in the Service Manual and see if you can troubleshoot each point in the circuit to see where the problem is.

These can be tough.
