1958 oldsmobile block number same as 1957
Ron I a'm a little vague on the mid fifties trucks but as far as I know the 57 and 58 engines are the same. If you are going for the number matching thing well the numbers don't match on the vin anyway but the number should start with a 58 if it was in a Oldsmobile car, not sure about a GM truck though....Tedd
Should mate up just fine to your transmission if that is your concern. if you use all of the 371 engine and flywheel as the 324 is internally balanced and the 371 is externally balanced. Most of the difference is in deck height and that shouldn't be a issue in a truck. 324 may have a different tooth count on the starter/ flywheel so use the 371 starter to match the flywheel. I may be wrong on this but as I remember the tooth count changed about then. What other issues do you have we may be able to get you going..... Tedd
The number cast on the block is usually not the actual number in the parts book .
Some GMC's used Oldsmobile engines . The biggest difference in them was the pistons ( lower compression ) , camshaft ( torque oriented ) and carburetion ( governed ) .
The'55 Hydramatic flywheel will have to be re-balanced to match the " offset balance " of the '57 ( or 58 ) engine .
The crankshaft may have to be drilled in order to install a pilot bushing in the crank .
Unless you are lucky enough to have a GMC motor . Which has a pilot bushing already .
