195* thermostat?

So I've got my 425 back together and I'm running it with no thermostat while I run some Prestone cooling system cleaner through it... Sunday I will flush out the engine & heater core again, then install my new radiator & thermostat. I bought a 195 t-stat, because that's what I took out. I also installed a temp gauge and I've noticed it hasn't gone above 165 without the stat... and I believe stock is 180(?)... do I really want a 195 stat? Seems like maybe it's a little high... although I've had any over heating issues in the past.

195 would likely be fine since your system runs at 165 (means you have plenty of cooling capacity) and you don't live in a hot area. Most modern cars run at 195 to increase efficiency.
On the other hand, 180 would keep the under hood temps down a bit and maybe help make a little bit more power. Since you had a 195 in there previously and didn't have any issues I would say stick with that temp.

I would change to a 180* If it is rated at 195* then it doesn't open until the coolant temps reach 195* which in my opinion is a bit too high for comfort between 195* and 210* which by then I would know there is a cooling problem.

That is what I was thinking. I think I'll swing by and exchange it for a 180 before Sunday.

The '67 Chassis Service Manual says "Use of thermostats above 180 degrees control temperature are not recommended." (Their bad English, by the way.) Sounds like getting a 180 is what you should do.

Not uncommon for a car without a thermostat to not get warm, IE 165*
I guarantee once you put the thermostat back the temp comes up. I'd go with the 180* one

I stopped and exchanged the stat for a 180. Then we took her out for a long drive... she runs like a scalded dog! Noticeably better than before! I also replaced the plug wires & all the vacuum hoses (I think the vacuum advance is working better.) Sunday I'll flush the cooling system again, then install my new radiator & the 180 thermostat.

Then... I'm ordering new carpet!

Looks good!

You should take a "before" photo of your interior now so we can see the carpet as it is now. Then when you get the new one in, we can see the difference.

Will do.
I'm also looking for a source for some high quality, large floor mats. All the mats I've found locally are far too small for the Old's floor.
