14x6 Wheel fit Front Discs

I picked up a set of 14x6 steel wheels for my '70 and before I drop them off at the painters, I want to make sure these wheels will fit a car with front disc brakes. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks

Probably not, '70's would have used a 14 X 7 wheel that did fit disc brakes...but there is a 14 X 6 wheel for '69 (795??) that will fit disc brakes...put the wheel on the hub and see what you have for space...there is a thread on this but I don't know where to look

Unless they are 1970's vintage wheels. Are they plain steel wheels, rallys with bolt on centers, rallys with snap on centers? John

What wheel number are they? Number stamped inside by the "14 x 6..." stamping.
Letters outside by the valve stem hole?

They are just the standard 14x6 steel wheel that Oldsmobile used back in '70. They came off a '70 SX with 4-wheel drums. I've got a feeling they won't fit but want to make sure first. I'd slap one on the car but it's in storage for another month.

SOME 14x6 wheels will clear factory discs (all bets are off on aftermarket kits). When disc brakes were first introduced in the late 1960s, GM used different wheels on the disc brake cars. 14x6 wheels were factory available with discs, but the contour on the backside is different from the drum-only wheels. I can tell you from first-hand experience that the 14x6 SSII wheels will clear factory disc brakes.

Thanks for the response Joe! I appreciate your help. I guess I won't know for another month till I take the car out for the summer. The person I purchased the car off of told me he has an identical set of these same 14x6 on his '70 SX that has front disc brakes. I hope they fit since I've had a hard time finding the 14x7 XT steel wheels and can't justify spending $450 for a set of new ones from a supplier and another 200 just for the caps. I spent $100 for the entire set of these.

There should be a 3 number code inside and a letter(s) stamped outside by the the valve stem hole.
There also *may* be letters/numbers stamped along the outer part of the outermost part of the rim on the inboard side of the wheel. These numbers can help identify the wheel.

Found a set of 14 x 7 wheels coded CL and have the following K1-0--3--2. Believe they are off of a Camaro/Firebird/GP. These should fit a car with front discs, correct?

Being that we're on this topic, and not to hi-jack, will 14x6 JK HG by valve stem, and also K3 by stem fit a disc car....factory of course?

Also, what might have a 14x5 JJ , HJ K3 by stem , come off of?

Thanks in advance.....

This will take some digging, but I don't think 14 x 5s were used past '65.

I believe all 14" x 7"s will fit factory discs.

I agree I don't think so either. I have a 72 front disk set up on my 67 and had to go with 15" Cragars.DSCN2135.jpg

The 14 x 7 or 14 x 6? I don't think the 14 x 6 will fit, but the 14 x 7 steel wheel was available on W-30/W-31 cars.

Starting in 1970, the standard 442 wheel went from the previous 14 x 6 to 14 x 7, and did fit disc brakes.
I stand by my statement that a 14 x 7 *should* fit. It definitely would if it was an Olds wheel.

Well you know I believe Elephant you have a point, there maybe some 14 inch that will work, however what is the goal? This may be taking the path of least resistance which I take somtimes because I am dealing non-original Olds cars anyway, get 15 inch Olds/GM rims and end of discussion. Just my 2 cents....

I had 14x6 SSII wheels on my 1968 442 with a disk brake swap from a 1970 Monte Carlo, so I have firsthand experience that these 14" wheels fit with no problem. These 14x6 wheels were also factory offered on the 68-69 disk brake cars.

Again, there are different contours on the backside of the wheel. The portion of the outer rim that drops down towards the center of the wheel does not need to be centered front-to-back. This is the fundamental difference between the drum-only 14" wheels and the disk-compatible 14" wheels.

Once again, I have personally run 14x6 steel wheels on my factory A-body disk brake cars.
