Just looked at 1972 cutlass ,original owner . When we looked under hood we noticed #12 written on underside of hood and right fender in chalk . Has anyone ever seen this or know what it might mean ?

Chalk marks are not unheard of on many GM cars. Some people re-apply or protect them during restoration.
Its probably related to some kind of assembly line method or reason. I don't know the reason or why.
The only pic I could quickly find of a chalk mark is in our "firewall stampings thread" Look at post #86 and you'll see the number 979. Its a good thread to check out when you have time. Who knows, you might have a stamp on your car too!
