Angry Gas Gauge issue's

I hate gas gauge problems I just discovered mine is setting at about 3 o'clock in the gauge itself.Does this mean the gauge is bad or what.I building this for my 17 year old he probably would not keep up with mileage. Any suggestions

I have same condition in my 67 Delta 88. Its intermittent, sometimes it locates the needle where (I think) it should be, then other times its over well past full around the 3 O'clock position of guage. I suspected a loose ground at the tank but could not reach the sender unit as its on top under the trunk. I have a full MX manual and the system checks in it are for a 'very well equipped' shop (60's era) w/factory test equipment. Not anything a 'backyarder' could do.
Hopefully someone has a 'smoking gun' solution. I really don't want to drop the tank. I just keep an eye on the mileage and compensate for the occasional 'pedal mashing' factor.

I had a similar problem on my 71 cutlass. I was going to replace the seding unit until I took it out and just cleaned up the grounding point. Works great now

Same problem with the ground when I put everything back together after replacing my tank. The gauge read 3 o'clock. So I disconnected the ground, took a wire brush to the trunk pan, reconnected and now it seems to be in the ballpark. ( I wish GM had put an access plug in the trunk pan to get at the sender unit).
