1972 Back up Light
Hi all. One day in on my new purchase. 1972 Cutlass Supreme. One of the backup lights are out. Upon inspection bulb is intact but wire broke at end and disconnected. Appears rust got at it. How do I go about replacing this? On the surface it does not look to be just a bulb replace.

Someone here probably has an intact backup lamp assembly.
You may have to loosen the bumper brackets and rotate the bottom edge of the bumper outwards to get at the attaching parts.
While you're at it, take the other one out too and clean attaching parts for good ground and reflectors for rust and dinginess. Then shoot a coat of gloss white paint in there. You'll be amazed how bright yer reverse lights will be.

Thanks and it is great to have this family to help each other. First day with her and just going over everything. Have some trim, missing emblems (seller may have) missing lens on fender, backup light out and passenger side park lamp out, and needs front shocks. Swapped out all interior courtesy lights and all work inside. Runs well, but needs some additonal TLC. Will also need to address the shift indicator not moving. Not complaining, it is a good start. If the shift indicator is pegged over to the left of the speedo beyond the 'park' position, it's probably due to a broken or missing column clip which attaches it to the rotating part of the column where the shifter lever is connected - if that's the case, you can bend open a medium to large size paper clip to replace it.
also check to ensure the metal attachment clip is bolted to the bottom slot in the column where the clip attaches from the indicator hook - if missing, that is also at least part of the problem

Since the car is new to you, suggest getting an original paper copy of the 1972 Oldsmobile factory Chassis Service Manual. You'll find it invaluable.
I've found the reprints and especially the CD versions of the CSM leave a lot to be desired.
