Don't know for sure but it looks like an aftermarket brake controller. Did/does the car have a trailer hitch? Maybe follow any wires to see what they go to?

It looks like a trailer brake control for a trailer with electric brakes.
Does the car have a trailer hitch?

Oldspackrat beat me to it.

Hi,

yes this car had a trailer hitch. There ist a wire to the electrical conduction under the trunk. And a pipe goes to the master brake cylinder.
What does this thing do?

Thank for answering.

That's my thought too! I see a dial right on the right hand for setting gain.

These are made for trailering heavy loads and with electric brake equipped trailers it uses the brakes on the trailer in conjunction with vehicles brakes to slow down faster and safer.
