What is this?

Anyone know what this is? It was plugged into the top of the fuse box. I thought it might be the main fuse but after taking the cover off it looks more like a buzzer or something.

Thanks,
Pat

I believe it is the flasher for the 4 way, usually they are a metal round canister.

What oldsmaniac said, it is either the 4 way flasher or turn signal flasher. I think the turn signal flasher is located just to the left of the steering column.

Here's a picture of it in place. My fuse box is dead from the front and I'm wondering if there is a main fuse that could have tripped where power comes in the back?

Could it be the buzzer when your key is in the ignition and you open the door?

The round things are the four-way flasher and perhaps the turn-signal flasher, I believe.

The way the thing flops on the top i think it could be a buzzer but it wasn't working before and now that there is no power on this side of fuse box i'll have to worry about this later. Thank you.

Pat, is that a newer fuse box in an older car? If so, we need to know what wiring harness that is & what year is your car.

I don't think it's original, as i'm finding with almost everything. I'll dig around and see if I can find some more info and take better pictures. Thanks!

The key buzzer is part of the horn relay on the firewall, so it isn't that.

That looks like a painless wiring harness I installed in a friends firebird. universal from 69 to 74 Gm. That was a horn relay on that one.

I'm not sure about painless because it's causing me quite a bit of pain today. I got the fuse box cracked open and I don't see a main fuse. I do see a wire from the battery and a wire from the alternator spliced together and then it plugs into the back of the fuse box. Is this a normal place to have these 2 wires spliced together?

That was probably not necessary
Get your wiring diagram out.
Probably a fusible link near the battery that feeds the fusebox.

It appears your wire for the e-brake pedal is dangling there unconnected.

"I do see a wire from the battery and a wire from the alternator spliced together and then it plugs into the back of the fuse box. Is this a normal place to have these 2 wires spliced together?"

Oh, huh, no that doesn't seem right. Why run the ALT to BAT wire to a junction within the fusebox? Usually the alternator runs right to the battery or a junction near it.

I was hoping there would be a fusible link too but there isn't. Not sure if the wire diagram will help because a lot has changed. Different fuse box and 1 wire alternator which are different from the diagram.

The battery cable is soldered directly to the alternator cable in the back of the fuse box with no fusible link. Is this normal? Where do the alternator and battery usually come together? I thought I saw something in the diagram about using the horn relay to connect them.

Thanks!

Thanks for info. I think I'll work rewiring the battery and alternator with a fusible link. The battery has + terminal has 3 wires. 1 going to the fuse box and joined with the alternator cable (planning on removing and creating a fusible link closer to the battery. 1 going to horn relay and 1 going to the starter. Are all 3 wires needed or should i rewire this a different way?

Still thinking about this but here are a couple articles that were helpful explaining different setups.

You could probably have gotten more useful answers sooner if you had told us the year and model that the fuse box came out of.

In any case, that is the horn relay. The mid-1970s and newer cars have the horn relay moved to that point on the fuse box. The wiring diagrams in the Chassis Service Manuals show that. My 84 Custom Cruiser has this also.

I'm sorry Joe but I just got this car and don't know what has been changed over the years. I still don't see anything on the fuse box that tells me a make model or year. I will try to do more research before I post. Thank you for the help.
