Under dash lights 70-72 cutlass
I inherited this project already taken apart. Cant find photos of how under dash Courtesy lights mount. Is this where the stock harness goes? Or do i need something else? If this is correct why cant I get the bulb i bought to fit while inserted and mounted? Was the bulb part number wrong size? It hits the spring prongs before it goes all the way in

Pretty sure that's the wrong socket. All factory option I've seen have tabs that go into the slots on either side of the round hole. The wire goes thru the round hole and courtesy lamp mounts below the metal tie bar.

The sockets don’t look correct but even if they were these bulbs are hard to get in and out. When I converted to LED a kitchen gripper and a pair of needle noses were helpful. I was fortunate not to break any bulbs, good luck

The sockets look correct to me. I also had a hard time getting the LED’s installed. I found I had to bend the tip of each one of the tangs out slightly so the base of the bulk can be inserted further.

I'd agree with everything people here have told you. But...the real issue is those repro sockets, the tangs are too long. Look at these sockets, I don't know if this is the right harness, but the sockets are typical.

You've got it all correct. Just gotta keep working it to get the bulb into the newer replacement sockets. As said, a slight manipulation of the tangs will probably get you there.
Cars without lights could be retrofitted with those little brackets. Put the socket in the bracket, mount the bracket wherever you like. Olds didn't use those, because these cars were built for the option.
