Tail light wiring help! (66 Toronado)

Ok need a bit of help here. I'm attempting to rewire my 66 Toro and it's getting insane. Finally got the headlights working but the tail lights are a mystery. I've been staring at this wiring diagram for hours and I don't know why my lights aren't working.

Basically when I hook it up like the diagram says I get no positive power at the rear sockets. The only way something happens is if at the headlight switch I put the tail light wire on the headlight connector then the sockets test hot but still no lights. So confused. I've attached some visual aids that hopefully help. Any advice would be super welcome. Thanks.

Do you have a ground in the system? Its been a few years since I messed with an early Toronado but I thought there was a ground strap under the latch area. There is a gasket between the tail lights and body too. You might try a jumper wire to assure you've got a good ground and see if that makes the lights come on. John

Argh...so of course i was testing them with the lights laying in the trunk instead of in the sockets. The socket has two metal tabs that act as the ground when seated inside the tail light. Thanks for making me check the simple stuff...
