Tail Light Issue

Im having a weird problem on our 67 442. I pulled out the dash harness and cleaned it all up and hooked up everything back up properly but now I can not get the tail lights to go off. Ive looked over everything 15 times and I can not figure it out. The only 2 ways I can get the lights to go off is to unplug the head light switch or to pull the plug on the firewall side. I have new switches and all new fuses. The only thing not hooked up is the instrument cluster because im waiting on Ron to send me my new dash. Any ideas?

Thanks

Oh and its not the brake lights its the tail lights. The blinkers and brake lights work as they are supposed to.

Sounds like you may have a shorted terminals on the headlight switch.

Well the switch is brand new and I tried it with the old switch and it does the same thing. I will take the plug apart and look at it.

Correct it is not the brake lights. But you know what I have not disconnected the brake light switch to just try it.

With the switch being brand new, you may have acquired one that is not compatible. This has been known to happen in the past, reinstall the old one and see if your problem is corrected.

Already tried that. The first switch I bought was actually the wrong switch. It was a 7 pin and I needed an 8 pin. I also put the old switch in and it did the same thing. I'm lost.

Inspect the switch connector, I believe the brown wire is for the tail lights and license plate light. Somehow you are getting voltage there with the switch off. Is there power to the dash lamps and are the front parking lights on also?

So to confirm I just unhooked the brake light switch and still have the issue. As far as the front marker light and dash light.....They are not on like the tail lights are. Its just the tail lights that are on.

Ok so I think I got it figured out........ $470 and 15 days and a new harness will be shipped to my house. We figured we would just get a new harness all other wires in the car are brand new ie. Front light harness, engine harness, ribbon strip, and rear light harness so we may as well get a new fuse block and dash harness. Obviously there is a short in the harness some where and rather spend hours trying to figure it out and having the risk of one of the 1967 wire failing again we better just bite the bullet and go new. Wish I could have figured it out but F it.
