I'd like to say quite a bit more than I will to your statement as you not only cross the line by questioning my morals but then you also comment on my wife. You don't know a thing about me or why that statement was made yet you jump immediately to the conclusion that I'm crooked or that I would try to pull a fast one on somoene. For the record, I have gone through 2 starters with NAPA over the past month. The first one, while it worked at first and spun the motor a little slow, was modified to install the hole in the side. So it was partially disassembled to make the modification. I also used the nose from a different starter as it was nicer. It finally started to get spin slower so I went to NAPA to buy another one. The store saw the unit and questioned that it looked like it had little use and why I was trying to buy another one and also told me that the starter was covered with a lifetime warranty. I told them I had taken it apart, swapped noses and modified the case to install the hole and was told they didn't care and that the lifetime warranty was not an issue. Their policy, not mine. I was very up front with them on what I did and was told they didn't care. I fully expected to pay for another one but instead they provided me a new one at no cost and this one works great. I also installed the hole in this new one. If this company chooses to do business this way then that is their decision. I wasn't trying to screw anyone nor do I operate that way. But I will tell you, the way they do business is what keep me coming back.

Wow, Napa down south is way better than in Canada, I've had nothing but trouble bringing back parts to my local dealerships.

I've recently been driving down to champlain, NY to buy stuff as stupid as paint and spark plugs.

It's ridiculous what we pay for parts up here.

Okay i'll stop ranting now.

Cheers,

Tony

You are 100% correct. Please accept my apologies The last part was uncalled for. From your original post it sounded underhanded, but store policy is store policy. If you read most lifetime warrantys the part is not covered if the part was opened. Some of the manufacturers will put a seal on one of the bolts with either paint plastic or metal. If the seal is broken it will not be warrantied. It is good for you the store has such a policy and you should continue going there. I do believe the store will be charged back from the mfg. and the store will suffer the loss. I will pm you with my phone number so you can give me an earfull. I deserve it and I hope it will make you feel better. I would also like to send you a hi-torque case with the hole in it so you can make the modification of switching fields easier next time. No drilling necessary. Again please accept my sincere apology. I did attempt to have it removed myself, but wasn't fast enough.

Neither was I when I removed that part - I know how it would be viewed and is inappropriate.

I have had to cobble up some working items when the manufacturer refused to repair or replace them when it should have (I am looking at you, panasonic and sony!) I am a true rebel when I know I am in the right, but I do not when I am in the wrong.

I called the Plano auto electric place and they said i had to go to another bad side of town far away, so they are out.

If I cannot just order a quality gut pack so i can rebuild this myself, I will take it to Richardson Generator this Monday and see what being a walk-in customer gives me.

If that fails, i will just order a reman Remy 455 starter from Rockauto and be done with it. Maybe the little screwhole on the side and the date codes are not that important afterall. Of couse I could end up with a screwhole int he head...

This is just as difficult as trying to figure out what to do with my original A/C compressor!

If you end up with a hi-torque starter with no hole, and want to do what 69442C did, I would be glad to send you a case with the hole also. No charge for either of you. Just don't ask for numbers specific.

Apology accepted and no need for any calls to blast anyone. Also, I appreciate the offer on the case but it's not necessary. Since this is Rob's thread, and if he wants it, send him the case so he can have a high torque unit with the hole in it. When I finish my current 442 restoration, I have quite a bit of house projects that need to be done. Not sure when an Olds will come back into the picture for me.
