Starter Question(s)

Yesterday I picked up a spare starter for a 455 Olds. It was a swap meet find, and I only paid $20. Now I have 2 questions: 1.) There looks to be a mounting stud on the side of the starter motor, is this to accomodate the factory style heat shield? 2.) The starter still has the GM-Delco stamping on the case with a number, can anyone verify the correct number for an Olds 455? Many thanks!

I believe it should be a threaded hole for a bolt to hold the shield on. Can you post a picture of the stud? Also if you would post the numbers stamped into the starter motor we can try to key it out for you. One downside to that, rebuilders can swap different heads onto the starter for different applications. You may have an Oldsmobile aluminum head with the correct mounting holes on a motor from a different GM line. John

Would that stud be for the starter brace?
