Can anyone tell me if a performance coil requires a ballast resistor on a 1967 cutlass supreme with stock points ignition system? (even though it has an existing resistance stock wire ) Thanks

 

"Note: If installing the Blaster SS Coil to a points distributor or a non-current limiting ignition system without an MSD Ignition, a 0.8 ohm ballast resistor is required (MSD PN 8214). The resistor should wire in series along with any factory resistors on the positive coil wire."

This is off the instruction sheet for a MSD coil. Their are many different brands of coils out there though. The instructions will let you know for your particular brand.

 

Thanks, I neglected to mention the fact that it is a 45,000 volt coil by proform, unfortunately it did not come with instructions. A tech there said it could be installed without the ballast resistor, but that it is recommended.


I asked here to get a second opinion and possibly an explanation of what the difference is between the two methods in regards to resistance.

I believe you have answered my question if the same applies to my proform coil as it does to the MSD coil you are referencing. In fact the PN for the resistor you list is the same as I was recommended to get.
