Need help....broke down at work

And who really wants that.....Bendix gear came off my starter and will
not engage. Does anyone know what kind of starter I need?? Its a mini
starter...I have a 71 CS, 455 with headers. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Contact a few of your local auto parts stores - they might have one!

Something is missing...hmm

Local auto shops are proving to be no help.....Will a stock starter fit on my car with Headers?? If not I guess I will send off the old for a repair. Thanks.

Forgot about the special small size needed for headers.
Have you check you local hot rod shops? Some of those starters have universal mounting plates to fit multiple makes.
If you can get the car towed home, you will have time to order a new mini starter online.

Thanks for the advise....unfortunatly Wake Forest NC is short on speed shops...online ordering is for me. I found the company that sold it in Dallas, Alterstart, but their tech guy is out till Monday...Its going to rain this weekend so nothing lost I suppose. I did find a kit at Summit but the customer service people could not tell me if it was compatible...it was for the Olds 455 however I did not know if the splines on the shaft would match the gear they sold?? oh well the fun of owning an older car. Not having a good time with no grease under your fingernails!

There are at least three different designs of mini starters and parts do not interchange. You need to know which one you have. All are based on Japanese starter designs, and if you knew the part numbers, Honda or Toyota parts would fit. Unfortunately the mini starter manufacturers won't tell you that, forcing you to buy the parts from them at a markup.

Only Pontiac and Olds starters interchange.

Do you have the old parts? It looks like you are missing a spring, the pinion gear, a lock ring, and a ring retainer. You may go to an alternator starter rebuilder in your area for repairs. They may even have the parts if yours are gone.

X2 on repairing it yourself!!
If all is there, the retaining ring is probably what broke - probably standard size!
