Mystery light socket

Hi guys,

I've been doing a lot of work under my dash and I found a light socket to the left of the steering wheel. It is connected to a grey wire. I put a bulb in it and it comes on when I turn the lights on, after I ground it. Any ideas where this goes?

Thanks,
Dave

I'm guessing it belongs to the light switch or just under the instrument panel ? the assembly manual would be helpful. They are free on wildaboutcarsonline.com free to join too

Most likely it goes into the female socket above the headlight switch. They are not real easy to install or remove. It is grounded by the socket. The little plastic that says lights should light up when installed.

Scott you might be right. I'm not sure if the wire stretches that far though. Does anyone have a pic of a light switch removed so I can see where it plugs into? I basically felt around and I can't see (or feel) where it goes.

It appears that I am missing the little metal piece that holds the light. I looked in the assembly manual and it shows this piece where I think the light socket plugs into. Here are some pics from the inside out showing the back side of the switch. Is this part available?

I am sure it is available used from some members here.
There should be a ring that goes over the threaded part of the light switch and it has a tab that holds the light socket. There is a 'bullet' covering for the bulb also. It has a small hole in it to project the light where it is needed. The bulb I think is a 1445 or similar - round glass.
Your job will be easy with the dash apart! My little dead bulb took over an hour to replace with an assembled dash.

Rob,
Thanks for stepping up with a good answer for him!

dfire,
I or several other members can get you that part. That light was part of the courtesy light package & included about 12 or so different lights depending on model. You should have a underhood light, trunk light, glove box light, ash tray light, 2 lights over the wiper switch area, 2 over the AC/heat plate, 2 over the front floor pans, one to the right of the radio, one in the rear view mirror, & one over the headlight switch. I have any & all of these parts.

I have all those lights except the one over the headlight switch. Well actually I have the light, but not the bullet socket. Maybe the light switch was replace at some time and they didn't put the receiver back in. Who knows?

At any rate I need one. Can you get me a price on one Scott?

The only problem is I might have to lengthen the wire a bit because I think it would be a tight fit. The last thing I want to have happen is to have it pull out after I put everything back together. That would not be fun!

Thanks for your help guys.

Does that mean the word "LIGHTS" should actually be backlit with lights on? That'd be another item on my MAW list...

Yes that's exactly what it is. Unless your car didn't have that option. I'm not sure if it comes on all cars.

Think twice - It allows you to find the **** and turn off the (license plate) lights quicker at night

If you read Scott's (oldspackrat) post, this is a light that's included in the courtesy light option. I guess if you don't have those lights you probably don't have the headlight switch light. Otherwise I guess you will have to stick your head under the dash and search around

Yep. Convertibles in 72 got that lights package standard, since there was no dome light. It was a pain to change that little bulb, but a neat (but a bit pointless) feature.

It also has a tinny hole with a blue filter on it that "shines" down on the pull out rod. For what reason, I don't know
