Minimum Electrical

Guy's I need your help. I have a 1949 Model 76. The wiring is toast, mouse chewed and rotted. When I picked the car up the owner said it was running 2 years prior. The engine is free and still in the chassis. What is the absolute minimum electrical that has be be hooked up to test the engine. I was recently watching a rebuilding show on Discovery where they started a V8 while hanging from an engine hoist. Looked very dangerous and not recommended, but I guess the point is they had very minimum wiring.
Thanks,

That's correct. Battery connected to the starter and ground to the block. Wire with a switch from battery positive to the + side of the coil (of course, you need the wire from the coil to the distributor as well). Use a remote starter button (or screwdriver) to jump the starter solenoid, making sure the switch in the wire to the coil is on.
