Lost spark completely (72 cutlass S 350)

My first classic car.
I recently put the engine back in my car. Got it running everything was going good.

I went to pull it out of my garage and it shut down. Started looking for the problem and I notice it has lost spark completely.
(Still learning do not know much) started testing with multimeter everything looked good. Changed plugs, distributor, cap and coil. Still no spark. Engine turns and turn but wont fire. Finally I ran a wire directly from my positive battery post to the battery side of my coil pack on top my distributor cap and bang it fired right up.
I have to unhook battery to turn car off now but at least it started.

Can anyone give me any idea of what the problem could be or what i could test or replace??

bought it off a flatbed and it's never seen a professional, only my own blood, sweat and tears!!!

If you have an HEI then you need to run a wire to a switched source for the car to run because the factory wire is a resistor wire to drop the voltage and save wear and tear on the points that the car came with.

yes it' HEI we switched that over back before I pulled motor and replaced rod bearing.
but it ran like that for months with no issues before and after reinstall and I just thought maybe something went back ignition switch or maybe a broken wire.
And my switched source so you mean something like a toggle switch?

You need to trace the wire that went to the BATT terminal on the HEI and find out where you lost power. Also as stated above you cannot use the stock resistance wire. If the wire is very stiff, unlike a regular wire, it needs to be changed.

No, a source that is "switched" on and off with the ignition switch.
The IGN terminal in the center of the fuse box would work, but if it was running before, do as said above and trace the distributor positive wire to see why it no longer has power.

If it goes to the IGN terminal in the fuse box already, check the adjacent fuse/s to see if its blown.
