lost keys

hey everyone looks like I may have lost the keys to my 72 cutlass supreme. I cannot remember if the same key operates the ignition and door, ignition and trunk etc. Anyway if I cannot find them obviously I have to have new set made. How do I take out the ignition?

The ignition and the door key should be the same cut. Much easier to remove the lock on the door (you need to remove the door panel) than the ignition without the key. Take the door lock to a locksmith and he can cut you a new key. The trunk is a different key, you may need to take the whole car to the locksmith after you get the ignition key made.

The door and ignition keys are the same on the 72 Cutlass .
Probably the easiest way to get a key is to remove the inside door panel and remove a door lock. The door lock cylinder should have a number stamped on the side of it. With this number a locksmith should be able to make a key. This key should work the ignition.
The glovebox lock can be removed in a similar manner and the key should also work in the trunk.

sometimes the glovebox cylinder has to be in the lock position and the door open to easily get the cylinder out. You may however be able to unscrew the lock by wiggling both parts while continuously urging in the dismantle direction. Then the code on the glovebox lock cylinder should get you a proper trunk/gb key. Assuming they are original.

A good reminder to always keep an extra set of keys. Saves a lot of hassle.

Lost mine about 10 years ago cost about 250 then to have a locksmith come out and rekey 3 locks. (I have a 72 also but the lock and ignition are different) Make sure you get the pin code also. Then any locksmith can make you a key with just the numbers.

If you don't want to go thru the hassle of pulling locks out, Just call a locksmith out and he will have a new set of keys made in under an hour. They can pull the ignition easily and cut keys on site. Cut doors and trunk also.

Or just send the numbers to Joe P and pay him $10 for the first key and $2 each for additional copies.

I found the original spare set of keys to my Super 88 when I was replacing the interior. The knockouts are still on them with four digits. Are these the lock number reference codes?

Any luck finding a code stamped on those cylinders? I've decoded and/or rebuilt dozens of cylinders over the years and I don't remember seeing codes on anything past the 60's. I used to take the cylinders apart one tumbler at a time and read them.

If you never have a code you will never be able to get the new keys whether you visit any locksmith or dealer.

You can take the cylinder apart and "read" the tumblers.

X2 on reading the tumblers... Also, I sure hope the key issue has been resolved since this thread is over 4 1/2 years old...
