lo amp 1 wire alternator for 68-72

The car is converted to 1 wire, had a big high amp chrome alt at one time, would like to bolt it something more reasonable.

Anyone know what other alternators bolt in? I think I used on off an 84 vette or something one time.

Search is coming up zilch.

Pretty much any internally regulated alternator should bolt right up. Just go to the junkyard and get one.

If the holes and the terminals don't line up where you want them, just remove the four long, thin screws that hold the case together and "clock" the halves with respect to one another to be where you want them.

Well, unconvert it. There is no reason whatsoever to run a one-wire alternator, and lots of reasons not to. Go to the parts store (or RockAuto) and get an alternator for a 1980-1990 Olds Custom Cruiser with the 307 motor. This is a 78 amp 12SI internally regulated unit that bolts directly to your alternator brackets. Connect the wire from the No. 1 terminal on the plug to the brown wire from the GEN light on the dash. Connect the wire from the No. 2 terminal to the threaded post on the horn relay. Connect the large red wire to the threaded BATT terminal on the new alternator. That's it.

At 20$ a pop junkyard alternators seem like the way to go at that price I can keep a spare in the trunk. Plus I get to dork out on looking for awesome stock hi amp stuff in the local yards.

What are the disadvantages you speak of though?

And isn't the alternator u specd here the newer style that would just work w the hacked setup its running now?

The SI family of alternators is what the aftermarket "one wire" alternators are built from.

The last time GM put an SI-family alternator on a production car was about 1990. I don't know where you live, but here in the mid-Atlantic, it's rare to find a car that old in a wrecking yard. Most yards keep cars no older than 15, maybe 20 years. There isn't enough demand for parts older than that to justify wasting the space. And why do you think a 25-plus year old alternator will be any better than the one you have?

The picture above is Remy P/N 20244, which is a stock 94 amp alternator. A rebuilt is $46 at RockAuto (plus core).

You'll never find a "one-wire" alternator on a production car. GM didn't use them. That should tell you something. For starters, they don't charge at idle.
