Ignition Wires - repo vs replacement
Ignition Wires - repo vs replacement
Three years ago I figured I would try the reproduction date coded ignition wires. I read a few places that although they look good they are not very well made. Turns out I have a ton of spark scatter. I guess I could always keep these repos in my trunk for shows (if that would ever matter as I have never gone to that type of judged show) and put better quality black wires on that work. Is this a typical problem as they are made cheaply, is three years a normal life-span for them?
Any suggestions? Should I get a new set of repos or just go with some other brand. From the searches I found here it looks like Taylor 7mm was decent.
Thanks

DO NOT get repro wires from Fusick. I bought a set for the 54 and a mechanic worked for several days trying to get the car to run. This was after an engine fire so it was not a matter of just replacing the ignition wires. They finally put on a set of wires they had laying around and the car started right up. It now has Accel wires on it and runs fine. I have never used Taylor wires but if oldcutlass says they work, I would trust them.
I bought several sets of NOS Delco-Packard plug wires still in their boxes fairly cheap on ebay several years ago. Yeah, you have to know your way around the parts book to make sure they're the right ones, but they will fit and perform right. You can often get correct date codes too, but big deal- they're always 1-Q-XX or 3-Q-XX anyway.
I've had decent luck with Accel. I've never used Taylors. Let's just say I'm not a fan of loud colored plug wires.

Thanks, I'll take a look at feebay and see what's there. I know I got the repo wires from one of those places most likeley fusick or partsplace. I read they weren't that good but thought "how bad can a spark plug wire be" well, I got my answer.

yeah, I just found some black taylors, maybe I'll give them a try. I kind of felt wires are wires as well. But I think this is the third set in about 4 years. Might as well get a decent set that will last.
Actually I was thinking of those fluorescent pink, green and orange wires Taylor offers. I could deal with the yaller Accels and had them on a lot of cars thru the years.
Hadn't thought about Mallory- they're good, just no one around here carried them.

My Accels are black. It is really not a big deal to me but since they had to be replaced anyway, I thought I might as well use the repro wires. Bad decision. Having Delco on the wires only matters if you are having your car judged at the OCA Nationals or something like that. That is not my cup of tea so I will be running the Accels for a long time. If I found a set of NOS wires at a decent price, I would grab them. There is a big difference in NOS and repro. I am finding more and more repro stuff is junk. I just went through that with and ignition switch from Fusick. It worked about 5-6 times and then quit. It was never even mounted in the dash. It was like $80.00. I bought an NOS one for $85.00 which is still expensive. Then I found another NOS one on ebay and bought it for $31.00.
I don't know the number. The mechanic put them on there when they were repairing the engine fire damage. I do know he had to cut them to length. Sounds like the Scott's were that Gunmars used may be the best deal. I have never heard of them but nothing beats a good recommendation.
It has been a good many years since I bought any Standard stuff but I remember it being a good product at a reasonable price. You should be fine with those. I would not hesitate to buy them.
I had the same issue with a set of repo wires from Lectric Limited. They lasted about 4 years and then developed the same issue of spark scatter.
I used to work in a NAPA store and really liked the quality of Belden wires. They look stock and were made very well. I managed to locate a couple sets and that's what I'm using now.

well, Lectric Limited showing only spark plug wires from 1961 up on there webside anyway.
Heard that the Belden wires are good stuff, but the NAPA online catalog are not showing spark plug sets for 1954 Olds. I have to find Part No.'s, because a friend of mine is on vacation in the staates and will pick up some stuff for me and bring it to my place.
Thanks again, redoldsman!!!
