help identify wire in fuse panel - 1969 convert
fixing some minor issues in car and noticed a connector coming out of fuse panel (top center) - appears to be no labeling so figure it may be an accessory. the connector is red and large it plugs into one port in fuse box and then a black wire and grey wire are on the other end. These wires are short and then plug into connectors coming off wiring harness by driver side. Reason i/m curious is that the black wire either broke or burnt off the red plug and is just hanging there. Not sure what it goes to, only things that don't appear to work on car are radio and clock.
thanks
thanks
I agree w/ the Erics that something is hinky with at least the bottom 2 connectors. You rarely see anything where the white one is, and I don't think the blue connectors were used 'til later. What kind of options or mods on it? Power trunk, windows, seat, rear defog? HEI, tach or gauges? I still think the red is the top feed......The radio wire is yellow, and runs through the fuses. You should be able to find it off the main harness behind the radio bezel, it may be cut.
Thanks, I was wondering if red connector was factory accessories, because the 2 wires then each go a short length to a black connector and then from there no idea. I'm going to have to dig in and look.
Other than convert, it has trunk release button (doesn't work), clock and lighted mirror, about it.
I replaced engine harness and had it modified for hei, so no desperate wire to fuse for that

Well...wiring is tricky if hacked, it's like me trying to guess which outlet your TV is plugged into at home! I believe the red connector is original and the top feed. Looking at the pic, I THINK that red connector may be a splitter. Normally, there would be a single wire with a red term for the top. If you have a map mirror (grey wire), that was sometimes split in there. Vert's are a bit different, 'cuz they almost always have a light package, courtesy lights under the dash, and that light over the radio. I'm guessing the black wire with the white connector was the trunk lock. Wired there to only work with the ig on, probably pirated off a later car that's why the clear connector. Then maybe they piggy-backed off that for an aftermarket radio or something. There definitely has to be a wire from the trunk button to the fuse box to work, that's not factory, factory was vacuum opped. You have to dig around.
After finding time, I've done some more investigating. The Orange wires w blue connector are for courtesy lights on/under dash. The white connector went into engine compart w round rubber connector w female end not connected to anything. Unsure what it was for as I replaced all engine bay wiring from firewall forward and didn't remove any accessories. The Brown wire off the red splitter turns on marker lights w ignition. Was this a factory item or was it a ppopular mod? I have no idea what the top grey wire is off red splitter. It goes up into driver side of dash and not sure from there. I thought it was mirror light, but unplug it and light still turns on.
What do you mean by top feed - power to convert motor? I believe the convert power wire is engine compart. The mystery grey wire only appears to be 16 gauge.
Only options involving power is a/c.
Glove box has trunk open button but I dug into it and found vacuum hoses, but doesn't work.

does your car have a underhood lamp? From what you said about the brown wire going thru the firewall, the under hood lamp typically had a brown wire running thru the firewall, plugging into the lamp harness, and a black end plugging into the fusebox... as for the red accessory plug, that is always dedicated for the map light mirror...gray wire runs up thru the pillar post on the driver side... you also state that the current brown wire turns on the marker lights with the ignition? That suggests to me that someone has spliced into the harness somewhere, because the marker lights are always wired with the headlight harness outside the firewall....hope I have not confused you! thanks, tim
Wire that had white connector was black and had factory female terminal came through fire wall on driver side below master cylinder and was coiled up not connected to anything. Doesn't appear to have Underwood light
I figured grey wire was for mirror map light, but when pulled it light stayed on. I'm going to pull a pillar cover and windshield interior trim and follow wire from mirror
Thanks for help guys
