Gas gauge wire

Hey guys where do i find the gas gauge wire to check the fuel gauge all i see is the ground underneath by the fuel lines .
does it come from the back of the car near the license plate or in the trunk somwhere?

Yes, it’s the brown wire that goes through the two wire grommet and exits behind the license plate.

You can unplug it in the trunk and ground the wire coming from the front of the car. With the key ON, the gauge should go to Empty.

On most Oldsmobiles from the 60s and early 70s the gas gauge sending unit wire is part of the rear lamp harness in the trunk. It passes through the floor of the trunk through a rubber grommet around the rear center of the trunk, below the trunk lock latch area.

Wait a minute that brown wire goes to the license plate light I don't see the other brown wire?

The fuel gauge sender wire is tan. The taillight wire is brown.

On the 68-72 A body cars the fuel gauge wire goes thru a hole in the trunk near the trunk latch.

OK, please forgive my color identification deficiencies. Mine looked brown.

It’s the “not green” wire in the two wire grommet.

lol, i new what you meant just fine
smh. I really appreciate your time I figured out what the knuckle head did.
he never pit the wire on the sender.
So i dropped the hangers lowered with floor jack hooked up a wire to the sender plugged it in and wala no more extra capacity tank. LoL

Now does anyone have the plug that goes on the sender? Because the wire is missing???
also was wondering about the high speed swotch /relay for the heater motor. Where is that located ? Is it the passenger side engine compartment? Near the AC firewall area only have low/ med
thanks sgain in advance been a big help. All these things are coming back lol.

M&H Electric has the wire - it's Part # 01040 http://www.wiringharness.com/ Should also be able to find at any other Olds parts dealer.



On a 70 the blower relay switch is located on the firewall behind the power brake booster.

Does anyone have a picture of the 4 color coded wires and how they go on the relay. Two were off and one plastic cover was melted wannna make sure i got it right. Thanks in advance mush appreciated i also ran a new wire and the high for the fan still dosnt work just low med.

There is an inline fuse for the high speed fan power. It should be between that relay and the fan motor. Many times the fuse holder contacts are corroded or broken.

Yes thanks found it, but high still dosnt work?
could it be the relay?

I didn't go into great detail to examine/trace the complete routing but I did look at the relay on my '71 CS this morning for you. My relay is located in the exact same location.

There are two Packard 56 Series connectors which plug into the relay. There are as you stated four wires.

On the far left-hand side (the driver-side) the single connector has a single BLACK wire.
Moving towards the passenger side the next connector contains two terminals inside one connector. The PURPLE wire stands alone (by itself) on a single terminal.
The next terminal inside that two terminal connector contains the remaining two wires connected together feeding the furthest most (last) terminal inside of that two terminal connector.

Therefore, while sitting in the driver seat, recognizing the driver-side is the left-hand side of the vehicle. The colors are: BLACK single terminal/connector. PURPLE (two terminal connector) first wire by itself, then the remaining two wires connected together on a single terminal.

OK Hold the phone. I thought about this, then went back to the car and disconnected the terminal connector. I was wrong. Give me a second I'll have the picture and diagram for you.

It's a 3-terminal connector, not a 2-terminal connector; so, each wire has its own terminal inside the 3-terminal connector.
The purple wire terminal stands alone (by itself) which should be obvious when viewing the connector.
The next two terminals contain the blue wire and the black + brown wire. The black + brown wire contains the in-line fuse.
Therefore, the blue wire is on the side closest to the firewall, the black + brown wire is on the side towards the front of the engine.

Yup i think i got it!
but my 3 terminal connector housing is long gone melted.
It has them all separate, so i put a black casing on one terminal so they dont touch each other for now.
but would like to get the correct 3 terminal housing that holds all three.

Del City has this one - it looks like it has the locking tab on it - not sure of an exact match. Nearly all these connectors are made by Delphi.

I believe I found the one you need. Take a look. Lot's of supply houses sell the Delphi/Packard terminals/connectors. Good Luck.

I know my memory of things is not 100%, but I remember on my 70 Supreme there being an inline fuse in the wire that connects to the fan motor. The fuse holder was along the firewall, near the AC housing.
