Can someone help me to understand why the two clamp screws on either side of the distributor cap are acting so ornery? At times they turn and go into place as expected, other times, it takes a wack to get them to turn. I lubricated but that didn't seem to make a difference. I checked a new distributor I purchased that is on my shelf and it behaves in the same manner? What am I doing wrong?
The clamp screws have tabs that engage in slots in the holes in the cap. They only engage at specific locations. You have to completely compress the spring under them to disengage these tabs and allow the screw to turn. Of course, once it's in place on the distributor, the notches that the screws fit into are only designed for the screw to go in one way - there's a wall that prevents it from going the other way.
Joe using your explanation, I revisited the new cap on the shelf and played with it a bit more and I now understand exactly what you explained. Your response goes a long way toward demystifying my issue. Thank you.

If you pull the hook end of the screw all the way out (compressing the spring) you'll see the tab on the side of the screw that fits into the slot.
