cruise control

My dash on/off switch for the cruise control. If the red light doesn`t light up.Does that mean the switch is bad??I don`t have the underhood stuff hooked up yet. There is power going to the switch. Also the ground wire on the harness.Should that be grounded to the body?(70 442)

You should be able to test the switch with an ohmmeter or self-powered test light.

See if the indicator lights after everything underhood is connected. Some of those transducers have a "light" terminal.

Always the chance the teeny little bulb inside the switch is burned out.

Your switch light probably won't light up until the control module is connected and the safety switches are connected. This means the brake light switch, the tach wire if you use it, and the speed sensor input. Your switch probably is what applies power to the control module. What type cruise is it? Brand, electric or vacuum, etc.

Same rules apply, the "smarts" of your cruise control will be stored in a control module of some sort and the switch applies power to it. You will probably have constant 12v input, the switched 12v input via the dash switch, a brake light switch connection, a vacuum switch near the brake light switch, a vacuum canister that regulates the throttle and some sort of speed sensor input. Your cruise control may not "turn on" until most, if not all, of those things are connected.
