Cigarette lighter
Cigarette lighter
Does anyone know how to get the cigarette lighter working. It might just possibly need a new fuse. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. I have a 66 Cutlass convertible.
Most often it's a simple R&R w/ a new cigar lighter - the element in the cigar lighter doesn't' last forever that's for certain. Have you tried the cigar lighter in a different vehicle to see if the element heats up? Cigar lighter receptacles are rather universal you should be able to test it in another vehicle - generally. Next is to check the wire on back (behind/under the dash) to ensure it's connected to the cigar lighter plug/receptacle. Next, is to check the (power) wire to the cigar lighter plug/receptacle is "live", IOW is getting power (12VDC). Finally, it could be the cigar lighter plug/receptacle needs replacement.
EDIT: I don't have a 1966 fuse panel diagram; but, yes - ensure a fuse connected to the cigar lighter circuit has not blown.

For starters, check to make sure the power wire for your lighter is still connected. There should be an orange wire connected to the center contact on the rear of the lighter socket. If it is there, give it a little twist to clear away any corrosion on the contact.
Next, if your dash has been out and/or apart, the ground may be loose. There are several metal straps on the backside of the plastic dash that provides grounding for the gauges, lighter, etc. Make sure the lighter socket is screwed together tightly so the outside of the socket has a good tight negative connection. The screws/nuts that hold the dash in place need to be tight in order for those grounding straps to have a good negative connection.
Obviously, check the fuse and make sure you have power on both ends of the fuse panel contacts.
