69 Cutlass: how to remove dash gauges?

69 Cutlass: how to remove dash gauges?

Hi!!

Would need to replace my gauges bulbs on my 69 Cutlass Supreme, and also fix the non-working clock!

Before I start something, could you tell me how to remove these gauges?

I hear it really sucks to do. I have new gauges for my 69 and will be facing the same obstacle myself. I look forward to reading the answer too.

I did this on my '68 4-4-2 and my '69 4-4-2. About the only way to do it, short of removing the entire dash, is to work behind the dash. There isn't a lot of room but it can be done. You can give yourself a little more room by lowering the steering column, or, a lot more room by removing the steering column. There are two attachment tabs for each pod on the back side, positioned about 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock for each pod, where the pods are held in place by tiny 1/4" hex head screws. Remove those screws, detach the wire harness for each pod, and then take each pod out through the front of the dash.

X2 what Randy said. Take them out through the front, I've had mine in + out a number of times.

A thin butter knife helps get them out as well. I've taken all three out from the front as described above.

Remove the front seat. This will make your life much easier. You can then lay out flat on the floor using the rear seat as a foot rest. Your neck & back will thank you.

Also taking note of this information since the clock of my 68 doesn't work either. Might fix it or replace it with a tachometer.

You can reach all bulbs without taking out the pods, I would only pull the tach.... If all you have to do is fix the clock. It is the easiest of the three to get to and put back in (super easy if you pull your radio) Only two 1/4 inchers to unfasten and three electrical connections to undo.

Hw do the gauge bezels come out? Do they just pull out from the front? What do you grab them with and is there anything holding them in place?

The bezels are screwed to the gauges, the gauges are screwed to the dash. The clock/tach housing isn’t terribly difficult to remove, the others are more involved.

Remove the seat, lay a heavy blanket on the floor. If you don’t, the seat mounting studs will shred your back. The gauges are held in by 1/4 screws, you will need an assortment of extensions, wrenches and lots of patience. Make sure the connectors are unplugged, and the speedo cable/PRNDL cable is disconnected. Once that’s done, carefully slide the gauge housing out the front of the dash.
