68 442 blower not working

Let me start by saying sorry! I know this has been covered ad nauseam! I'll cut to the chase... trying to figure why I'm not getting the blower to work. It's an AC car. It all worked before I rebuilt everything.
I did replace the wiring harness which could be the problem. I have power to the blower relay (orange/black wire) then nothing beyond that. I jumped the battery to blower 10 years ago and it spun.
Just now I jumped the battery to the purple wire in the connector (pic below) and it is shorting out. Sparky spark! Am I jumping it correctly or is it not grounded properly? Also, can someone give a quick instruction on how to test the blower relay?
Thank you!
Craig
