67 Cutlass Convertible top goes up half way then stops
This may no be an electrical issue.
When I push the dash "Top up" button ,It goes up to a point (see Avatar picture) and stops. I can hear what sounds like pistons shooting oil.
At one point the top got "stuck" in that position(half up) It slowly came down but not from the dash "down" button. And even when it was down it would not latch(I assume because there was still pressure in the pistons)but I really don't know why.A few days later I could finally latch the top down.
Now to me this looks complicated when I started looking to find the up\ down
parts in the back seat back window area.Does anyone have any knowledge or tutorial on how to get to and diagnose\replace? Or could this be an electrical issue at the dash?
Thanks!

MudEye, I am not familiar with your year car but on 50's era cars the hydraulic motor- pump is located behind the rear seat and you may be able to access it from the trunk,it usually is behind the boot that covers the top when it's down.It lies in a aluminum box in earlier cars (don't know about your car) and on top of the pump is a plug or fitting that you can add fluid. But first you must make sure witch fluid is in your pump. They used both brake fluid and transmission fluid so match up your fluids. Next get a bunch of rags because this can get messy in a hurry. Add fluid sparingly and check by raising and lowering the top,If you over fill it ends up under the back seat so be careful.I hear there is a filler adapter that takes some of the hassel out of this but I have never used one, may pay to look in to this gadget.Good luck... To add fluid I understand that the pistons must be "down"
So,Are the pistons"down" when the top is down(latched) or down as "The wind is blowing thru my hair down" ? If it's the latter, then I can't get it down.
Thanks

this is a better thread I was looking for earlier
http://www.chevelles.com/forums/show...light=fill+top
As for your question on my car I built it to handle like a modern sports sedan and it did that very well. If you go to the link in my signature you can follow the whole build.
