65 88 wont start.
65 88 wont start.
Ok so i bought a 65 dynamic 88 and removed the dash to replace the pad and i also pulled the battery and fender.. I put the dash back and battery (not fender but there were no grounds on it) and now it wont start... It did just fine before... So i began to check that i had put all the wires back correctly and i had... So.. I replaced the old worn and loose battery cables. Nothing. Replaced the battery with a new gold premium one, the old one had a dead cell, nothing, replaced the ignition wires at the switch and starter, still nothing, replaced the starter, still nothing. I have replaced everything except the ignition switch, even fuses (which none are for starting the car)... Now the wierd part is everything... I mean everything except the starter has power... Any ideas what it could be? Thanks in advance. Oh p.s. steering wheel is off also if that has anything to do with it
You need to limit your troubleshooting to the starting system. It has about, what, 4 or 5 wires? Neutral Safety Switch comes to mind. Try starting it in N.
If that does not work, then you need basic troubleshooting with the wiring diagram at your side. Is 12V present at the purple wire on the way to the starter [at horn relay / junction block] when key is in START position? If so, the trouble lies between there and the starter. If not, trace back to NSS and ign switch.

Im not sure if its twelve volts but the purple wire has lots of juice, the shift handle is off so i cant start in neutral.. As a matter of fact everything except the column itself (the main core of it) is off, my chevelle would start with out all the handles and steering wheel, are they required for this car?
Whereabouts did you notice this juice? On the near side or the far side of the neutral safety switch? I agree that this is a good possibility for your problem, you should be able to losen it and move it around if you're not able to move the shifter. I'd also suggest getting a voltmeter, it will help with troubleshooting, and will also let you know exactly how much juice "lots of juice" is...
Good luck.
If your steering wheel and shift lever are off, and your neutral safety switch is not in he correct position, you can get pretty bored trying to start it, 'cause it ain't gonna go.
As mentioned above, you need to troubleshoot. You've already discovered that throwing parts at a problem won't fix it.
Have you tried applying 12V to the solenoid terminal?
Have you tried applying 12V to the purple starter wire?
Have you confirmed that there's always 12V at the big terminal of the starter?
Have you confirmed that there's 12V at the purple wire from the ignition switch when you turn it to START?
You get the idea...
