56 Olds Light Problem

I was driving home the other night with my lights on for about 45 minutes. They started going on and off on me. I was only a mile or so from home and managed to get there after pulling off the road, then they would come back on. I replaced the headlight switch with a new one from Fusick a couple of months ago and this was the longest I had them on since the new switch.
Anyone have any ideas how to check this out? I wonder if it is the reproduction switch.
Thanks for any suggestions
Rick

Was it only the headlights, or all running lights?

I think that was about time they started using thermal circuit interrupters in the headlight switches in case of too much electrical load thru the headlights. The interrupter opens to avoid burning out the switch and recloses when things cool off. If the overload is severe, you may see continuous headlight off-on cycles.

Were you on high beams? and are you using halogen headlamps in the car? Check and clean all the connections and grounds to ensure least resistance in the headlight circuit.

If this issue started after the installation of the new switch, i would suspect the switch.

Rocketraider - It was all the lights that went out and I was using the high beams 80 % of the drive home. I was thinking about the dimmer switch being the problem. After they came back on the final time I kept it on low beam and did make it home. Thanks for the information on the circuit interrupter. I was wondering if it had some type of circuit breaker.

Lady72nRob71 - That was my thought. The replacement switch was not as heavy built as the old one.

I forgot to say they are the original headlights not Halogen.
