1979 Custom Cruiser Wiper Problems
1979 Custom Cruiser Wiper Problems
Hi!
I am new to the forum and have a situation I need some advice for. I own a 1979 Custom Cruiser and managed to mess up the windshield wipers. Now I am at whits end!
My wiper switch: OFF-Pulse-Slow-Fast
What happened:
- Wipers were working at all speeds (w/ Intermittent), wash pump was not.
- In order to check and clean it I dismounted the wash pump, NOT the whole motor assembly. When I put the pump back on, nothing worked anymore, neither motor nor pump.
- So I got a new pump. Didn`t change anything. No function whatsoever.
- Then I mounted a water pump assembly from a 1979 Toronado. Now the wipers worked at one speed (slow) in all switch postiions, except for "high" position, where they stopped working. No pump function.
The motor assembly works in the Toronado and has the same part number.
- So I bought a new wiper motor assembly, with pump. Since then, it has become outright weird. The wipers will come on, the intermittent feature works sometimes, so does slow speed, high speed does sometimes. The wiper blades return to park position after every stroke (or every second stroke). They do also switch between speeds by themselves. And when you put the switch do OFF position they keep going. For some minutes or indefinitely.
Pressing the "wash" button causes an audible "Click" in the pump and will trigger the wipers. Sometimes.
There is (obviously) battery voltage on the white cable on the connector. However grounding any other connectors does not get the wiper motor running.
Fuse has blown several times during all my tests, of course.
Could anyone please help me with some advice or suggestions? Again, everything was fine with the wipers until I first removed the washer pump!

I don't have any body manuals at work but they list a different cover with/without delay. If there was a circuit board in the pump cover it may have been disturbed when removed. I've seen bad delay boards cause all kinds of strange problems.
Many thanks for your reply.
Yes there is a "curcuit board" (or the 70s electronics equivalent) below the pump cover, which provides intermittent function. I also thought there might be some problem with it but I should have tackled that when swapping the whole wiper motor assembly for the one from the Toronado and then again when mounting the new assembly, both of which I had not tampered with....

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess you're from canada francaise. Welcome.
The motor is normally hot, the switch interrupts the ground circuit. The fisher body manual has the diagnostic tree for this.

No, I am from Austria.
Yes, that also happened. After one hour of changing speed by themselves, moving in and out of the park position etc. the wipers just stopped. After cooling down, they started woking again. But that is not my problem - I need to find out why they are ...going crazy in the first place.
