1972 Cutlass Radio and Speaker Question

I just received a Custom Autosound USA-630 radio for my Cutlass, and had a question or two about the speakers.
From what I've read, I should have one speaker under the dash, and one in the rear panel behind the seats. The panel behind the seats is solid, and no speaker can be seen from the trunk. I am unable to find a speaker behind the dash either, other than two kick-panels with speakers that look to have been installed by a previous owner. I'm thinking that I'll get this: https://www.opgi.com/cutlass/1972/in...age-tray/1C58/ and install it with two speakers for the back. For the front I'm thinking about going back to original kick-panels, and just finding somewhere for two more speakers in the front. For speakers I'm looking at just getting two pairs of these: https://www.opgi.com/cutlass/1972/mo...nents/CH26867/ . Does this sound like a good idea? Any recommendations are very welcome!

I think you got a rear speaker only if the car was ordered with an FM "stereo" radio. AM got just the dash speaker.

I don't know where you think you will find room to install 6x9 speakers up front.

I would use the kick panel speakers - that's what I have in my car and I like them.

x2 for the kickpanel speakers. You may need to install similar new ones if they are very old. On the rear pkg tray, you really don't need to replace that panel if yours is in good shape, you can use the provided grills that come with the new speakers. If you go with the new pkg tray then you would need to install studs prior to installing the new tray.

Actually, the rear speaker had to be ordered separately - RPO U80, RADIO SPEAKER, Bi-Phonic Rear.

Wattage

Thanks for the advice everyone, I've found some kick-panel speakers. Now I've got another question. My radio is advertised as putting out 240 watts (4x60) on the website, and 300 watts on the box. Either way, this seems insufficient for two 180 watt speakers (6-1/2, kick-panels in front), and two 120 watt 6x9 speakers in the back. Will I need to get an amplifier to reach the maximum volume potential of the speakers?

You will need a 4 channel amplifier to drive those speakers. If you don't, the head units amp wont last long. I have a 72 442 with a aftermarket head unit in the glove compartment driving a 4 channel amp in the trunk powering two 6.5 speakers in the kick panels and two 6x9's in the rear. Car audio manufacturers are famous for exaggerating their specs. In your head unit, the 240 watts claimed could be the peak wattage, not continuous (RMS).

So would something like this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/kicker-c...&skuId=7945059 be just right, or overkill for two 6" x 9" 120 watt speakers and two 6-1/2" 180 watt speakers?

X2.

Like most DIN size head units, this radio will be lucky to output 10 watts total. Forget its internal amp and get an external one. If you have a bench seat you could also mount the amp under the passenger side.
The kicks up front and 6x9s in back powered with a 50WRMSx4 amp will give give some very nice sound at any speed!
I have 6 speakers powered by a 50WRMSx4 MB Quart amp and I love the sound and loudness, even with top-down on the highway!

For your 6x9's, is that 120w power rating is RMS or peak? Same as the 6 1/2's, is that 180w power rating is RMS or peak? The RMS rating is the continuous power the speaker can handle. The peak rating is usually double the RMS rating. If those speakers are 120W and 180W RMS respectively, that amp would be perfect.

I have an old Carver magnetic field 220W amp , and I love that thing ! I put a Rockford speaker box in the trunk and removed the bolts on the upper portion of the back seat so I can lift and fold it inward to capture the sound . The Clarion CD player also has 150W that I could hook to some speakers in the cabin , but I haven't added that yet . I added these components to the car because they were just laying around doing nothing for years . I figure they're old enough now that no one would steal them .
