1967 Cluster removal - How?
1967 Cluster removal - How?
New poster but I've searched the site fairly well. 1967 Cutlass Holiday.
I have intermittent dash turn indicators and no instrument lighting. Just picked up the car yesterday and found a new headlamp switch has been installed, "inst". fuse is good and several new dash bulbs in the ashtray. Someone has been chasing this.
I removed the round connector from the back of the cluster's printed circuit board to discover two pins pulled out with the wire side connector. I need to extract those pins from the connector and repair the circuit board securing the pins.
I spotted one post saying you have to pull the column. Others talk about removing the cluster to service gauges etc. So how do you pull the cluster to remove the circuit board? Does taking out all the speed-nuts and mounting screws allow it to slip through from behind? I thought the speed-o and wiring was disconnected and the whole cluster pulled out toward the steering wheel? Man, this one is tricky!

Welcome to C.O.
Maybe this will help you. Go to the instrument panel section 1-3

I'm not an expert, but I just did this on Saturday on my '67 442 Holiday Coupe. The circuit board has a bunch of screws holding it to the instrument panel and if you remove those, you can slide the CB out. The IP is one solid piece of plastic and you cannot go thru it to get the CB out. It will be difficult to remove the screws so it may be easier to remove the dash pad/IP and get easier access to the back of the IP. There are 7 speed nuts that you remove (3 along the top and 4 at the bottom), and a brace between the radio and glove box (two bolts), and the entire dash pad/IP can be rotated out so you can get access to the CB. There will still be a lot of wires and cables connected to the IP so you may want to unbolt the steering column and let it drop a little to give yourself more room to work on the back of the IP after you get it out.

If you can send me an Email to rroth01@att.net.
I have created an Excel Spred sheet that will run you through it step by step.

In principle you can remove screws and take the circuit board off without removing the instrument panel and pad. In practice you will find it easier to remove the assembly using an 11/32" deep well 1/4' drive socket on the studs that retain it to the stamped steel dash. You don't need to remove the steering column but you will find the wiring harness is attached to the instrument panel with loop retainers, and of course you need to unscrew the speedometer cable.

Wow,thanks guys.
I was able to slip the PCB out with out too much drama or gymnastics. The worst part was 1967 insulation falling in the eyes! I was able to resolder the pins that were loose and solder the broken pins back down. Getting a proper "circle" alignment was tricky without a jig or test connector.
