Has anybody successfully added a rear curtesy light to the back of a 4-speed console? I am thinking of doing that on my 66' 442 and wanted to know what you may have used for a bulb holder socket and how it was mounted up in there.
Any photographs would be nice! Thanks in advance!
~Dave...
I think the earlier four speeds came with a light but not '68 or '69. I picked one up last century and put it in my '68 but never wired it up. When I first got my '68 the light lense was painted and I enquired at the dealer "what was up" and after some phone calls to some one who knew "what was up" the answer was NO LIGHT. Grrr
The courtesy light in in the 1966 manual transmission floor mounted console was cancelled. Evidently there were issues with the light causing issues with the lense so the lense was painted black. Service Manual page 12AA-12, Fig12AA-122 and FIG 12AA-123 shows it. I have seen the harness for sale a couple times but very rarely lately. The 66 Cutlass assembly manual Page 1-2.20 shows the cover that replaced th light. Hope this helps some.
I removed the black paint from the lens about 15 years ago with lacquer thinner and added a bulb socket wired into the courtesy light harness. I think I used one of the stock courtesy light bulb sockets. It’s loose in the back of the console now but I never mounted it (nor did I put a bulb in it). I seem to remember that I tested it to make sure it worked.
I’m working on various things in the interior now. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
Supposedly they only had the light for 1-2 years and it melted the housing so they stopped using it.
Thanks Allyolds68... I suspected a melting issue. I am hoping to put this back in operation w/ possibly a LED bulb to reduce heat inside that small space.
I guess we’ll see how this goes. I’ve got it wired into the courtesy light circuit. I removed the flock from the inside to expose the white plastic lens. I’d already done it to the back lens
