Can a water pump be rebuilt?

My orig wp on my 88 is leaking through weep. I have a new unit to put on, can my orig unit be rebuilt? I assume it can since you can by reman units. I want to keep it so I can throw it back on the car at some point.
If it can who is a good pump rebuilder??

I have used this guy two time and both time turned out great. Both were $95 and shipping. I prefer to get them rebuilt over the parts store cheep replacements. I have see to many water pumps go out from the parts stores.

Yea I found kelloggautomotive.com that also does them, don't know the cost yet, but they claim that if you want them too they can leave the patina conditionon them if you want them too.

I'm ready to try Arthur Gould Water pump rebuilders in Long Island, NY, they advised they will rebuild my water pump and leave the existing exterior alone. The ad is in Hemmings.

Years ago, I did it myself. It's not so difficult, but you need a press and a source for the bearing and seal. There was a good source in New Orleans, before Katrina came to visit, August 2005.

Before maybe the mid '60s rebuilding a water pump was a regular part of a mechanics routine work.
It was worthwhile to pay him to take one apart and fix it rather than just bolt on a new one.
But production costs for making them came down and mechanics pay went up in real terms, until it was cheaper to simply put a new one on.
Now it might have reverted to being worthwhile again, pumps for old engines are no longer being stamped out in big production runs, as indeed are many other parts. But bearings are standard sizes, and gland packing is readily available, plus old car hobbyists might get a kick from doing it themselves, even if it costs more than buying a pump probably made outside North America.

Roger.

Used Arthur Gould Rebuilders in late 2010.
Prompt response on request for information/quote ($75).
Excellent work, returned parts as requested.
