Anyone know of an easy manual trans swap for the '62 Dynamic 88? Just off the top of my head I was thinking about the M-22 Muncie rock crusher but have'nt found any info online yet.

M-22 is a nice, heavy duty trans, but with the 2:20 to 1 first gear, would like be starting out in 2nd gear, with any rear ratio numerically lower than 3:90 to 1.
M-21 has a 2:54 1st gear, and would be much better for a 5000 + car.
Had done that switch on a '67 Impala SS 396, and the owner couldn't believe it was the same car!
Night and day difference!

 

Does the M-21 bolt up without too much headache?

 

The later 4 speed big cars (64-66) used M20s, probably better to get a big beast moving from a stop. No Muncie will bolt up behind a 394, unless an adaptor plate of some kind is used:



Clutch linkage on those cars is pretty "funky" and is not going to be easy to find, so you might have to go with a hydraulic clutch, too.

 

Attached is a pic of the manual 3-speed my 1960 Olds came with from the factory. I could not tell you a thing about it in terms of make/model.

 

M21 and M22 both have 2.20 first gear. M20 has 2.52 first. The trick is to find a manual bell housing, since later ones won't work with the 394. I believe the car will weigh somewhere around 4200 lb.

 

I always confuse them - my bad!

 

If you are talking about a factory bell housing, keep in mind, it won't be drilled to accept any of those Muncie's.
