Stock lamps for your Delta are most likely std sealed beam on the outers (low/hi beams) and halogen on the inside (hi beams).
Changing all 4 to a good halogen type (like Wagner) and proper alignment will give a huge difference in light output and visibility. I have done this on all my old cars and have no complaints. It is hard to drive new cars afterwards after being used to mine!

I dislike hid due to initial cost, color, repair expense, and often limited beam spread.

... waiting for the DOH!

C'mon, Rob - you know there were no halogen lights on any '72 car.

Original lights were sealed beam incandescents all around.
Halogen sealed beam replacements didn't even come out until about 1980.

But your advice is good, and I second it.

As far as HID replacement goes, there are good (read: "expensive") kits out there and there are bad (read: "cheap, eBay Chinese crap") ones.

Read Daniel Stern's excellent information pages on this subject, He's selling lighting, but he seems to be speaking the truth.

the biggest problem is that most of the HID kits out there are cheap chinese crap and are not true HID lights. if you something that is an improvement you need to buy the true HID kit which is not cheap as it has amplifiers, etc that make it all work. most of the ones you see on ebay are just bulbs that mimick the look but do nothing to help visibility.

Real HIDs with the proper lenses and reflectors?

Or ones that claim they will fit into units designed for H1s or H4s?

Please share! I am somewhat skeptical about HID kits because I have heard a lot of horror stories but I would like to get some additional input.

I can only giIve you my experiences but I have a hid kit on 3 of my cars. My 72 cutlass supreme,72 Chevelle SS and my 96 impala SS. I've had them all on for about 4 years and have never had a problem and I drove all of my cars all of the time.
I've had one ballast go out in my cutlass but that was after using it for 2 years. I even drive with the lights on during the day. They are bright!!! They are 6000k kits

Yes. That's exactly what I used. I had to buy 4 headlights though because of the cutlass front.
Everything was straight plug and play and didn't take longer that 10 minutes to install.
I love them!!!!!!

You need these lenses to mount the bulbs. They take the H4 style bulbs.

Yeah I know its a firebird site but there all the same lens.

Get the HID kit here, 4 years and still going strong

These are NOT the correct bulb housings for HID bulbs. Read the Daniel Stern lighting link someone linked to before.
Alot of guys throw HID bulbs in the incorrect housings WITHOUT the D2S glare shields, and it's going to scatter light
everywhere and blind traffic. It's illegal and annoying as hell. http://www.hidorigin.com/h4-to-d2s-d...eld-gen-3.html

These are just upgrade kits you can buy to convert to a rear H4 style bulb.
Not HID though. You can use them if you get the D2S glare shields though.

Plenty of ebay retailers sell 5 3/4" H4 headlight sets cheaper too.

I bought 2 of my HID kits from these guys back in 2004 and 2005.
I got a hookup price through Hayabusa.org

I see they are still using McCullough so I will share my experiences.
The vehicle 6000K HID kit I bought failed within 1 year. Literally 3 weeks before the 1 year warranty expired.
They were cool and replaced them for me free of charge. Ballasts failed.
1 year later they blew out on me again. I used the relay kit as well.
I didn't bother ordering another kit from them. That tells me they're junk.

The only one that's still alive is the one on my Hayabusa. Reason being is my Hayabusa is NOT a daily driver.
Whereas my 2000 GMC SUV was.......so consider that fact when you say 4 years if it's not a daily driver
it's not being used heavily like daily drivers headlights are.

A cheap VERY commonly used retailer today is DDM Tunings HID kits.
I can't vouch for them, but they are being used by TONS of guys I know these days and they're MUCH cheaper.

"Halogen headlamps and HID headlamps require very different optics to produce a safe and effective—not to mention legal—beam pattern... "

Do every other driver on the road a favor and READ this article by Daniel Stern before you put HID bulbs into H4 housings in your car.
That way, if you are driving around blinding oncoming traffic, at least we know you intend to offend others, and aren't just doing it by accident.

I've been rereading this thread and I'm wondering,

I read Dan Sterns headlight guide posted above and it says that HIDs are illegal in older cars, but then is says something about if you have a "Hella" conversion it's OK. I have the Hella conversion kit, so is that legal

Also, that Cutlass in the pic, needs an alignment

The other thing, I've been looking at the kit on www.blindinghid.com and they have a kit for older cars, so no wire cutting is neccessary. But do you need a relay kit that you have to hook up to the battery, it says you do for the high beams, but not the lows. I thought you needed it for these cars no matter what

Alignment???
Well, from what Ive gathered all HID lights are illegal in California if they were not originally equipped with them from the factory. Fortunately I haven't been pulled over with any of my cars that I have installed the lights on. I have three old cars. 2 cutlass' and a Chevelle and they all HIDs on them.
I am not sure what state you are in but the law may be different.
