another one! 1969 delta 88

Hey guys, I was on here a few years ago with a red 69 delta 88 ended up having title issues and having to sell, and then I unfortunately had to pass up one of the best deals I've seen from amesolds damn wife.. but now

Today I picked up another 1969 Delta 88 455 turbo 400 car has presumably 130k and seems to have been "restored" very stock motor right now. 2bbl stock everything but the outside and inside have been done. needs some work but a good start.

Congrats! Good start, indeed. Regardless of what's restored or original, that is one good looking car.

And they look just as barf-o-rama on that big Oldsmobile as I'd have expected. PLEASE ditch those abortions and put SOMETHING more appropriate on that gorgeous car!

Ya gotta remember that with very rare exceptions, I don't like Chevy Rallys even on Chevrolets. Don't like them at all on anything else. Never have understood why people go so nuts over that ugly-*** wheel...

+1.

This is a dignified, full-sized car.

Hubcaps and discrete whitewalls are the only appropriate wheel treatment.

I'm inclined to agree with you guys on the rally rims but there not the worst thing I've seen on a car by a long shot, and you ghttp://1970-Olds-Delta-88-1600x1200-1_zpsxnnjbz9n.jpguys will probably like my choice even less. Im thinking of http://

I personally think the Chevy rallys are one of the best looking rally wheels, and I think they look good on your Olds. Thats a really nice looking ride. Interior? I dont know, but its in good condition. Maybe they just needed to use that material on something, who knows. Great car, enjoy it, build it to suit your taste.

Racecar-styled aluminum wheels don't suit any full-sized car IMHO. They need chrome or styled aluminum wheels with fine details to make cars that size pop.

I know I'm a minority in my dislike for the Chevy Rally Wheel, but I have several Chevy friends who dislike them as much as or more than I. One of them describes the CRW as "overused" and another as "plain damn ugly". The "plain damn ugly" guy has a brother who puts them on everything. Gets interesting when those two start talking cars.

fair

thats fair. To each their own the rally wheels will stay for bit as the budget is slim and safety requires other items, headers leaking exhaust leaking. seat belts not working,
I ordered headers I know they will need modification to work but i paid $130 for Brand new Flowtech headers that fit a 71 delta 88 and all other stuff I figure for the price I can modify them as needed that and Hot Rods engine masters series on youtube used dyno testing to prove that a few dents here and there for fitment won't kill any serious HP.

going to do 3" full dual exhaust with dynomax race bullets and an x pip not sure which first or after thinking into x pipe and then mufflers before axle.

or 2.5 what do you guys think? I'm not to worried about back pressure eventually I want to go for decent HP I understand that dual 2.5 are food for now but I would prefer only do this once.. opinions?

Good luck.

You do know that the '69 is a rear-steer car and the '71-up is a front-steer car, meaning that the steering box and linkage are located in completely different places, requiring completely different header designs, right?

well I do now! Haha worst case I find out no amount of re-engineering will work and before I distroy them I'll return them. But everyone always saus "no way" and I suppose "where theres a will there's a way"

Anybody know a reputable place for seatbelts?

What is wrong with your belts? I have some blue ones but you might be able to fix yours? The female buckles are easy to take apart & maybe you have some junk in them? Or is it the retractors that won't work?

Lots of women have said that...

They may be gummed up from 45 yrs of little use. Blow the buckles out good with compressed air or a can of computer duster, then a shot of WD40. Worst case is the latch springs are weak. Just finished swapping buckles around on the wagon for that.

Congrats on the car purchase.

You can go ahead & send those headers back. They won't come close to working. You need to buy an original or the re-po S manifold from Thornton & install true duals.

73-87 Chevy Truck & GMC wheels will bolt right on your car if you are looking for other cheap options for rims.

Here's to big 2 door coupes. I miss mine.

Wow another great option! I was always thinking of using truck rims because of the cost and the fact that to me at least most of them look pretty good and well you can pick up some wide rims for sure. Does anybody know what the widest wheel you can fit under the metal without having to mini tub or roll the fenders? I was going to pick up a set of 15x10 truck rims just to see

The 69 Delta came with 2.56 gears with optional 2.93s if I recall correctly. Some got 3.08s I think. Anyways before you get carried away with the rubber figure out what gears you have.

PS: Deltas use the same lower control arms as the A body same year. Try to find a factory sway bar to add to your car. You can see one peeking out from under my Royale. This is a Delta specific bar & hard to find but greatly improves the handling.

My Delta had 2.93. That is a 275 60 15 out back & it fit the car well.

Dave can you use a aftermarket rear sway from a Impala that year? That was a nice ride

I'm running 235/55/17 on mine and they fit without rubbing and improve the handling on my big boat and still has some what of a comfortable ride over the craters in Ohio

Yeah, i wasnt going with drag radials or anything crazy biggest wheel and tire combo would be 18s max but most likely 17s because Tires are cheaper and i like having a bit more meat. But truth be told I'll end up with old truck rims (wide) hopefully. I would LOVE to do the swaybar but its going to take a bit of time before that, car needs work. Exhaust and seatbelts are first. Then intake and carb distributer

Look up under O-Dave's car and notice those perfect turndowns. That's how big car exhaust should look- understated but purposeful.

Headers for that car will be an adventure unless you know someone capable of building you a custom set. Get the Thornton repro S LH manifold and go from there.

Not going to lie I slightly regret going to 3" exhaust due to packaging reasons. And it would have saved me about $100 doing 2.5

Also Headers came in, looks like I'll only have trouble from one header tube because of the steering box my real concern is the upper control arm A arm. Looks like it will be very tight.

3" exhaust?

You may well lose power, when compared to 2½" or 2¼" because of reduced scavenging.

This is a low-RPM motor, and will not benefit from such huge pipes.

MDCHANIC I plan on doing a true X pipe to assist with scavenging. Long term I plan to do a motor build and either a tunnel ram (yes i know I still havent learned) or possibly an 8/71 on a built bottom end with EFI Very long term goal. So a little power now wont kill me. But theres no way from the single 1.5 and cast crossover manifold that Ill lose power going to this.

Also most of the exhaust professionals I've heard from say that around 500 crank is the transitional period betweem 2.5 and 3" duals due to the CFM the motor puts out at that point.

That sounds about right, and if you're laying the groundwork for future modifications, it makes sense, but your current motor is rated at 310 SAE Gross HP, which is probably about 260-270 SAE net HP at 4,200 RPM, which is the way power is measured since about 1971.

At maximum HP, your engine is making 442CFM (yes, it works out to that number), which can be easily handled by a single 2½" pipe (see below).

OP - sweet ride, congrats.

Not wanting to hijack your thread, but thought I'd post a CL car that's caught my eyeball here in the NW and definitely on topic. Just in case your car is making other wanna buy one. No racing stripes or mags tho.

Looks like a pristine 1969 '98 coupe, 31K orig miles reportedly. Similar color as o-Dave's car maybe. Not my car, know nothing about it beyond the ad.

http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/5471898429.html

Have to say I like the open wheel-well look of your (and others) 88 better rather than the 98 skirts personally, but thought I would share. I will inspect and test drive for interested parties for a six pack of beer

all those high dollar power addons with be worthiless unless you find a fab shop to weld you up some headers!!! had my 70 for 24 years been all around it and just stuck with a mild cam intake and just installed FAST ex efi kit, found a 2:9? factory rear end( which is the tallest gear they made for these at the time.

Hi. I have 68 Delta and I found from here about a year ago 3.08 rear end after some years of searching (original was 2.56 open). I have also "pro" handmade headers installed (not an easy job but I'm more than happy the result). Left side header is divided into two pieces. There are few pics of those in my album.

Those are some nice headers and nice car. How much is gasoline by the liter these days in Finland?

About 1.6 $ for premium (a bit over 6 per gallon). No matter what the world market price is - the fuel price on pump remains almost the same. Thanks for taxation.
