Front motor mount, 56 Olds
In putting everything back together, I find the driveshaft is too long. The engine and trans were out and new rear springs installed. Before I pull the new springs and put the old ones back in, I wonder if I put in the front engine mount in correctly. Does the mounting foot face the radiator, the way I have it now, or does it face the rear of the car? Please take a minute and see how yours looks and let me know. Thanks Chuck

Sorry I can't get to my car for a while and check on that front mount orientation but if the front mount was backwards wouldn't the transmission mounts be off also, holes not lining up.Did you have the transmission bolted up first then the front mount?.....Tedd

Tedd, the engine and trans were put in as a unit. There is more than one set of holes in the frame, and the cross member is not symmetrical, and the mounts them selves can be reversed. I think the way I have it is correct based on the distance between the fan and the radiator, but perhaps the fan could move closer by an inch and still clear. The front mount, to my way of thinking, dictates the engine position. Thanks for your input, Chuck

Found some old pictures of when I first took out the engine and trans. I do have the front mount installed correctly, the problem in the driveshaft length is the rear end. I will have to go out and dig the old springs out of the pile under the deck and put them back in. Will let you know what I find. Thanks, Chuck

Thanks Yellowstatue: I dug the old springs out of the pile yesterday and noted that the locator was not centered. I went back and looked up my daily journal on the re-assembly and found that apparently I had installed they correctly the first time, but for reasons I don't remember, reversed them. I will heat up the garage this pm and flip those puppies back around. Since the engine/trans was not in at that time, I couldn't use the drive shaft as a gage. Appreciate your help, Chuck
