Cruise Control not working

The cruise control in my 1964 Jetstar 88 is not working, and I was wondering if anyone could help lead me in the right path. As of now, there is no response whatsoever from the unit, but before, it would tension up the gas pedal, but not set at any speed. I'm about 94% positive the unit itself, but I could be doing something wrong. I did get it to work once at 40MPH, but that was it. Any suggestions as to what is going on?

Is it the factory cruise setup (control on dash to left of steering wheel) or an aftermarket? The motor-driven cruise can be a complicated beast to troubleshoot.

It's the factory setup.

I have the same "Perfect Circle" factory cruise on my 61 Olds. The "set" button goes to ground, if I remember correctly. Make sure that switch is indeed grounding when depressed. Can you feel the unit press back on the gas pedal as you obtain the set speed on the dial while driving? Can you feel the speed setting change on the gas pedal? If so, the cruise unit is still working, it just won't set. If this is the case, I suspect an open wire to the "set" button, or a ground problem with the "set" button. These old units usually do not give much trouble.
