Compression Question 324 1955

I have checked compression and 2 cylinders are at 85 , 3 at 90, 2 at 100 and 1 at 110.

This is cold test. Is this bad or good? I feel its low and indicates some wear in the pistons and rings? My research says I should have seen around 120 from all.

Best to check with it warmed up and all the spark plugs out ans the throttle all the way open. You can insert a small amount of oil in the cylinder and check again if it comes up that says rings if not could be a valve. Also a cylinder leak down tesy might give some more info.

Warm Compression test Results

#1 115 #2 140
#3 115 #4 125
#5 115 #6 125
#7 120 #8 110

This was done like you suggested. These numbers are much better. I didn't try squirting any oil in the holes I figure it is what it is. For some reason #2 was much higher on both tests. Does anyone know if these pressures are with in spec?? I'm going to just pull the heads if thats the case.

They are pretty close to being within tolerances, I have always heard plus/minus 10% is good so you are right on the edge if you figur 125 as your average.

I would be happy with those kind af readings.. You may have a little carbon build up on the one that is at 140

Heads only or full overhaul

I'm debating. Sounds like my lower end is in better shape than I first thought.

Whats your vote, full rebuild or just the heads?

Hard to say... I will caution you on doing just the heads. A valve job on an old engine SOMETIMES causes it it start using oil. Because when the valves are sealing it can put alot of pressure on the rings and start it using some oil. This dosn't happen every time BUT you need to be aware what can happen.

Norm what do you think

Rings

I was talking to a friend and I mentioned that exact thing to him. I guess its a tough call. I hate to spend 1300 or more dollars for nothing but, I know deep down its the only way to start with a clean slate and be sure all is right.

Just wasn't planning on this for sure. I guess I have all winter so it really doesn't matter.

interior

I have some its not so good I will try to get them up on here tonight.

Thanks for the complements. I hope to get the interior done this winter, I currently have parts of the front floor pans cut out and am working on getting those welded back in before I go back with carpet and all.

Look at it from the other direction.

Doing a valve job on an engine that needs to be rebuilt, will cause it to burn more oil.

If it don't leak, and it don't smoke, it ain't broke. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The lowest reading should be within 80% of the highest, and none should be below 100#

If all conditions are not met, a valve grind, is recommended.
