Bill, can you refresh my memory on those caps, i.e. can they be used on most any rims, or do they require a unique rim to install?

Scott, pretty sure they can use the same rims your car has. Those caps are actually 54-56 dogbowls but are listed in the parts books for 15" wheel & police on up thru about 1965-66. The 50s rims had those spring clips that held the cap on.

I had always been under impression all 65-71 3-speed stickshift big cars got the Ford toploader 3-speed instead of the GM tranny. Commonly called "Dearborn" transmission in GM applications.

Guess Olds figured that 15" wheel option, like the 3-speed, wouldn't generate enough orders to make specific 15" full wheelcovers or their own heavy-duty transmission worth manufacturing. So they raided the parts bin for hubcaps and called the folks across town who had plenty of suitable transmissions and were willing to sell.

My 1960 Super 88 came with the M13 B-O-P- Heavy Duty Synchromesh sporting a 6-bolt top cover.

3 Speed Transmission

No Ford Top loader here.. GM all the way ! I was told it has an 11" Clutch by the prior owner (70 yr old lady). Everyone is telling me 10.5 clutch, we shall see this spring or sooner.

That's a Borg Warner T-16 heavy duty 3-speed.

Well, I should say I think it is. It's pretty hard to tell in that pic.
But the T-16 was GM's heavy-duty 3-speed in those years, same as used on 396 Chevys.

I guess I'll find out for sure when I drop it this spring.. I'm getting some slippage & chatter, so I'll replace the clutch. Only makes sense though to use an HD 3 speed transmission behind the 425.

Take a quick look at the side cover where the shifter arms are. It should have 9 bolts and a curved bottom.

I've been checking the internet & looks like there is a casting on the right side, this should tell me what it is. I will check it out.

This is a 3-spd Dearborn out of a '65 442 circa April '65. Very early for the HD 3-spd manual.

Scott, I was wondering how long it would take for you to chime in. Those caps fit on the rims with no problem.

Thanks, Bill. But what I was wondering was if the caps and rims are special; in other words, would those caps work on the usual steel rim or can they only be used on rims like the ones on your car, and vice versa (that is, do those rims require a special poverty cap). My recollection (but I can't recall for SURE) was those rims were a special police item, and the caps are a holdover Olds kept from the 50s. Read it on this site some years back I think.

That baby is going to need far more than a wire brush; more like a scraper is what is required?

Easy Now... Just kidding, yeah you are right though, it looks to be just a little build up there... Like I said all original, never a part. It's 29 degrees out, but sunny.. I may attempt to scrap it off ... Inquiring minds would like to know, to include myself.

Well after some serious elbow grease, I finally removed the crud off the side of the transmission to see the numbers.... Who wants to know what it is ?

Well go figure! Your guess was right.
Wasn't T-89 mostly a truck piece?

Just curious, so I checked further.
The toploader I show in post #55 was option M14 and available starting In Feb and only available with the 442 for the remainder of '65. It became the B-body 3 speed manual in '66.
I wondered if after Feb '65, it went in the big cars too. But no, the Assembly Manual shows the toploader (identified as the "2nd type") was only available with the 442 (L78) and cop car A-bodies with the 400 (L77).

Thanks Kurt you are the man when it comes to Oldsmobile info. Also I sold my 1966 442 L-78 option car , 54,000 original miles, just needed some love & a place to do it. I'm maxed out for work/storage space. I still have my L69 option 66 442.

Bill, I was browsing eBay today and came across this.
Might be nice to have just in case you ever get a thought of installing a nice Hurst floor shifter
