adding delay wiper question

hey all, i have a 78 delta with standard two speed wipers and bought a used delay motor and dash switch from a 1980 olds 98. i thought adding both would work but im not so sure as it would not work at all at first so i removed it and after powering it off the car from wires from the battery, it came to life finally. upon reinstalling it into the delta it would just run regardless of dash switch being off, delay or high. i popped off the black plastic cover on the top front of the motor housing the electronics and cam setups and played around with the cam setup and it did start working with the switch on/off high /low but no delay. then once the white cam worked it's way around the motor would just stop and not work again until i messed with it again. the question is should this setup work as is, and the delay setup on the motor just bad or would it not work by switching just the motor and dash switch?would the harness be the same for the wipers regardless of the delay option or not? i had a 1988 chevy and it worked when i did the motor/ switch swap but maybe because it was newer? many thanks in advance!
