'62 Dynamic 88 Reverse threads!!! PLZ Help

My 1962 Dynamic 88 has been sitting at the mechanic's for a week all because Oldsmobile decided that for one year, they were going to really screw with one model of car... the Dynamic 88. Not only are the lug nuts for two of the wheels reverse-threaded (got that taken care of...), but the nut that holds the wheel onto the spindle is reverse-threaded on ONE wheel! According to the mechanic Oldsmobile not only decided to test "reverse-threads" on wheels in '62, but also they decided to throw a COMPLETELY different front-end on the Dynamic 88 than EVERY OTHER f-ing car. And since the moron I bought the car from did not know anything about cars, or even reverse-threads apparently, he completely stripped the nut AND most of the thread on the spindle, replaced the brakes, and then put it all back together so that there is nothing holding the wheel in place except a tiny carter pin (or whatever it's called).

Does anyone have a '62 Dynamic 88 front-end available to sell me?

There are a lot of things about these cars that a "modern" mechanic would not know.
My advice, get a 62 Olds service manual. Factory manual is best. Here are a few:

Or get one for free on line at;

You will have to sign up for the websight to view material, but registration is free.

I hate to break it to you, but 62 wasn't the only year for reverse threaded studs

According to the Olds parts book;

Steering knuckle (spindle) group 6.020
Part # 584699 fits 62 all except f-85 left side

And

Nut, steering knuckle group 6.022
Part # 584691 fits 62 All except F-85 left side

62 was all by itself, but at least all full size cars took the same parts.
Spindles were different for left or right side as well as the nuts.

Hope this helps you in your search.

Not sure when it started but the left hand threaded parts lasted until at least 1963 on both Oldsmobile and Buick, not sure about other GM lines. Chrysler products used left hand threaded lug nuts until at least 1967 based on personal experience. In all cases that I've seen both the lugs and nuts are marked "L" to warn mechanics although I don't think the spindle nut is marked. When I took my Starfire to a mechanic I taped a big warning sign next to the left side wheels about this problem, surprisingly he already knew about it!

54 and 55 had left hand lugnuts and probably the earlier olds did also. I know mopar products also went through the left hand thread fase so it was pretty common in the earlier cars to be a mix and match on the lugnuts, it''s just the new guys that have to be reminded...Tedd

my 63 actually has reversed threaded spindles on the front passenger side wheel and on the rear driver side wheel. luckily I didn't brutishly force them off the wrong way, and tried in the other direction. good luck repairing the stripped ones, and on your front end project!

idk why they would do all that though, what is the reasoning at the factory behind this if it is original?

There was a thought that right hand threads on the left hand side of the car would back off from vibration and the spinning of the wheel most always spinning in a right hand direction.Wasn't so.....Tedd

I guess GM finally realized this .
In the 1963 Olds parts book there are separate left and right spindles listed for 62 models.
In the 1972 issue of the parts catalog only one spindle is listed , and It's useage was 2 per car. It was the former right spindle and included the nut.

Newbie needs 1962 Dynamic Drivers side spindle nut - Left handed threads?

Still feeling my way on the site. One thing I do require is a spindle nut for 1962 Dynamic 88 for the drivers side. If I understand what I read here correctly, it has a LEFT handed thread. Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated. As an afterthought, if it is indeed a left-handed thread, I would gladly purchase such a nut, but maybe I could borrow one for a week (with a deposit or something)? I am just needing to relocate the car I just bought and the left front spindle nut is missing.

There is a chance that Fastenall or other fastener store may have that size nut in left hand in stock or if not perhaps they could order one. Even if it was just a regular left hand nut it would probably work to move your car for a few miles... Just a thought.... Tedd

I sure that I have one, from a 63 Starfire. I'm sure it's the same. I just have to find it. Let me know if you still need it.
