394 cid fuel questions

I have a 64 Olds Dynamic 88 with the 394 ci low compression of 8.5:1
The motor is all original aside from being converted from 2bbl to a 4bbl.
Should I run a lead additive and a high octane fuel? If I do, will I have to adjust my timing? -Thanks in advance

My 62 Dynamic 88, 394 c.i., 2 bbl, low compression engine runs just fine on low octane gas with an additive. However, my additive is TEL = Tetraethyl Lead.

I would just put in regular unleaded and not worry about it. Just because modern gasoline doesn't have lead in it doesn't mean that it doesn't have additives that protect the valve seats. I had a Jetstar 88 and for five years put nothing but 87 octane unleaded in it, and I never had a problem.

You certainly do not need to put premium fuel in if it wasn't called for back in 1964. In fact, using premium fuel in an engine not designed for it could harm the engine.

Have you tried it without adding the lead?

Im just concerned with harming the exhaust valve seats since they werent producing hardened seats prior to the elimination of leaded fuels. I see theres a lot of debate on this subject and want to learn as much as I can if it will keep me from having to pull the heads.

D. Yaros-do you notice a difference in the fouling of your plugs?

I would argue that putting in a lead additive will not hurt. But the question is, is it necessary. And you're right. That's a subject of constant debate.

How much do you drive this car?
If you're not doing 10k miles a year, and don't have high valve spring pressure (stock cam & springs, right?) I wouldn't worry about valve seat recession.
Just use regular gas and relax
