1985 Delta 88 rear end

OK I r confused

So with what I have learned on here and some of my own research, I have found that the 1991-1996 Caprice/Impala 9C1 rear end is the best to get for some power to be put to it.

The 9C1 rear has 30 spline axles and a 3.08 posi, some are rumored to have a 3.23 posi and even a 3.42 posi. They could be the Impala SS rears though

Yes they do have disc brakes and a 5x5 bolt pattern on the wheels.

As for the bolt pattern, I could just go and buy bolt pattern adpaters. I would only buy good ones like the ones I saw on Summit. I wouldn't waste my time or money on some eBay crap. I could also just have the axle hubs drilled out to accpet the 5 x 4.75 bolt pattern too.

Brakes: How hard is it to swap drums in place of the disc? I cannot find any info on how to do this. Tons of info on the disc swap thou. I did find this interesting though. You can do the disc swap with no modifaction needed to the brake system or valve IF the rear calipers are smaller than the fronts. Car Craft magazine did this swap and pulled rear calpiers off a Caddie and the rotors, for a 5x5 from the same Caddie, for the 5x4.75, from a 80's WS6 Trans Am. It doesn't matter to me though. I could stick with drums in the back.

The confusing part is: at the track this weekend I met a guy racing a 1985 Dark Blue Delta 88 (other than me ) and he's got a 455 in there with a 400th trans. He swapped the rear in from a 90 Chevy. Last year of the "box" style but he was telling me that I need to swap in a rear from a Grand National and it will bolt right up and give me the 5x4.75 bolt pattern too. It's a 28 spline with a 3.42 posi and will hold up fine to the Hi Compression 330 I'm dropping in the car soon. Also he said the 200r4 trans will be fine behind that 330 in stock forum.

Is he right? I didn't think the 200 could handle much more than the torque from the 307 which has 140hp/255 ft lbs. The 330 has 320 HP/360 ft/lbs plus I'm going to be adding headers, edelbrock 7111 intake, and full X pipe exhaust. I know it's not setting the world on fire, but it's a hell of a lot more stout than the 307 in there right now

I think the G-Body rear is more narrow than our B-Body counter parts.

I'd stick to the B-Body rear... The money spent grabbing and fabbing a GM rear into your Delta would be no comparison to grabbing a B-Body 8.5 and slapping all the parts in it.

Any reason why you wouldn't want to use the Disc setup?

The disc brakes don't matter to me one way or the other. As long as the discs aren't go to give me problems with a direct swap, I'll stick with the disc.

Yeah that's what I thought about the G v B body rears

The GN axle is quite a bit narrower, like 6" or so narrower. I suspect that the lugs for the upper control arms are at the correct angles, but I doubt the lower arm attach points are in the right place. I've killed two stock 200-4Rs behind stock pavement-ripping VIN Y 307s, so draw your own conclusion.

I know, this guy seemed so sure, I knew he was wrong.

I've been looking for 200r4's online. Not yet, but soon

Redog, I have a 2004r and a 7.5" with brand new 3.08 gears installed into a delta 88 housing here. I will be in Bethlehem, and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania sometime next week if you want me to toss some thing in the trailer for you.

The 90's caprice rear ends are ok, but remember you will have to get your drive shaft shortened, and swap out brake proportioning valves.

A stock 330 olds engine would be a lateral move in my opinion. I'd hold off on the swap until you soup it up a bit.

Also, Joe is correct. The g body rear is 51.5" between the backing plates, and the delta is 55.5".

The frame rails would be sitting on the tires if you tried using it.

Thanks Jay!! I kinda figured.

What spline axles are in that rear? I'm trying to do better than the stock 26 spline that I have now. The 200r4, stock or modified?

The thing I REALlY need is a headliner. I broke mine, got pssed and threw it out. Been regretting it ever since.

Bethlehem isn't too far, but the 'Burg is the other side of the state
